Our continued commitment to respect the heritage of our families and the natural beauty of our grounds provide the community with a place of respect and honor for our families to pay tribute to their loved ones.
In 1929, Dr Bruning started Woodlawn Memorial Park I. He sold the cemetery in 1956 to Ross Sullivan after 27 years of distinguished service to the Joliet area community. In 1969, Dr. Martinucci and Victor Gallo purchased the park and 400 additional feet to the east to allow for more growth. It is our desire to maintain the integrity of service provided since 1929. The beauty of Woodlawn is unmatched by any other cemetery or memorial park in the Joliet area.
One of the focal points of the park is the swans. Many feature stories have been written in local papers about their beauty and elegance, and the peace they provide for our visitors.
The grounds consist of 22 well-manicured areas including a swan pond, butterfly garden, two veterans sections, and culturally sensitive areas for Greek Orthodox and Serbian Orthodox burials. The solid bronze lamps throughout were specially made and designed for Woodlawn, and the newly restored bell tower is lit up at night and visible from Jefferson Street. Woodlawn Memorial Park I offers traditional ground burials, private estates, and indoor and outdoor mausoleums with niches and singe, double, and tandem crypts.
Formerly known as Hills of Rest, Woodlawn Memorial Park II was originally a Lutheran cemetery. The park like setting is home to wild life and fauna. Deer are often sighted in the quiet morning hours. Established in 1907, Woodlawn Memorial Park II is surrounded on three sides by forest preserve.
The grounds are intimate and cozy with mature trees, gardens, and wildlife such as deer, birds, and butterflies. Woodlawn Memorial Park II offers traditional ground burials and a columbarium with pillars from the original courthouse in Joliet.
